Acadiana’s new congressman says he sensed renewed energy in Washington as President Donald J. Trump was sworn in to office Friday.
“The mood in DC is incredibly optimistic,” said U.S. Rep. Clay Higgins, R-3rd District. “There is an energy rolling through the streets here that folks can feel and sense. I look forward to being able to contribute to the reforms that Congress can work toward, with the vision and leadership of a new president.”
Higgins’s staff said in an issued statement that he spent much of Thursday visiting with citizens from Louisiana and the 3rd District, which stretches from St. Mary Parish to the Texas line. The statement said Higgins and his wife Becca will be active participants throughout the inaugural celebration.
“President Trump’s inaugural speech was courageously inspirational. His dedication to restore the power of ‘We, the people,’ was clearly communicated and reflects my own constitutionalist ideology. I am confident that the Trump administration will work closely with the Congress to restore our nation’s rightful place as a leader of the free world,” he said.
Higgins, a former St. Landry Parish law enforcement officer, was seated with House members during the inauguration. His wife sat with congressional spouses.
Higgins, elected in a Dec. 10 runoff to replace former Rep. Charles Boustany, was sworn in as a member of the 115th Congress on Jan. 3.
