LAKE CHARLES, LA – Congressman Clay Higgins (R-LA) met with officials at the Port of Lake Charles today to discuss the Port’s state of emergency and hurricane-related navigation closures on the Calcasieu Ship Channel.
Congressman Higgins has had extensive communication with the U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, river pilots, and other local stakeholders on efforts to remove obstructions and restore full navigation to the waterway.
Congressman Higgins issued the following statement:
“Hurricanes Laura and Delta caused extensive damages to the Port of Lake Charles and the Calcasieu Ship Channel. Both are critical economic assets for Southwest Louisiana. Channel navigation has been greatly restricted due to several sunken barges that are obstructing safe passage. We’re working closely with the Port, the Army Corps of Engineers, and the United States Navy’s salvage experts to clear those obstacles and reopen the channel to normal commercial activity. We’ll continue to push for all necessary federal resources as Southwest Louisiana rebuilds and recovers.”
