House Passes Five-Month NFIP Extension

December 21, 2018
Press Release

Congressman Clay Higgins (R-LA) issued the following statement after the House passed a five-month, standalone reauthorization of the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) that extends the program through May 2019. The measure was pushed by Senators John Kennedy (R-LA) and Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-LA) in the Senate.

Congressman Higgins issued the following statement:

“This 5-month reauthorization provides Louisiana home and business owners certainty that their flood insurance policies will continue, especially in the event of a prolonged government shutdown. My office remains focused on passing a long-term reauthorization that protects affordability, improves floodplain mapping, and prioritizes pre-disaster mitigation. The House of Representatives passed a long-term, 5-year NFIP reauthorization, which included excellent reforms, in November of 2017. Since then, the Senate has failed to pass the House bill or produce their own long-term NFIP reauthorization and reform bill. I support the continuance of NFIP. I do not support the failure of the Senate... obstructed by their own cloture rule...to perform.”
