WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Clay Higgins (R-LA) introduced H.R. 5260, the Advanced Nuclear Technologies Act, which expedites the demonstration of at least four advanced nuclear reactors by 2028.
The bill amends the Energy Policy Act of 2005, to direct the Secretary of Energy to carry out demonstration projects in a timely and cost-efficient manner.
The United States is falling behind the rest of the world on development of next-generation reactors that are faster and cheaper to build, which is critical to maintaining the nuclear fleet. Advanced nuclear reactors would provide significant benefits such as lower electricity costs, lower waste yields, greater efficiency, and improved safety features.
Companion legislation in the Senate passed through the Committee on Energy & Natural Resources on March 8.
Congressman Higgins’ bill has been endorsed by the Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI) and the Bipartisan Policy Center (BPC).

However, I also support the development of emerging technologies, specifically advancing small modular nuclear reactor development. This will expedite the research and development process, cutting costs and establishing a clear timeline for completion.
