WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Clay Higgins (R-LA) issued the following statement after voting against H.R. 51, a bill to create a 51st state from the District of Columbia.
“The Constitution sets specific parameters for the creation of our Capital, independent from the influence or geographic control of any single sovereign state. If Democrats want to make DC the 51st state, then they should follow the Constitutionally-mandated process. That means returning land that was originally ceded from Sovereign States, gaining approval from the Sovereign State’s legislature, and, further, repealing the 23rd Amendment. Only then could DC statehood potentially move forward. This bill would never withstand Constitutional scrutiny. Today’s vote is purely for media headlines. Speaker Pelosi knows this.”
Congressman Higgins spoke in opposition to the bill when it was marked up in the Oversight Committee. View that video above or here.
