WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Clay Higgins (R-LA) is introducing the “Medical Care Equity Act,” which would initiate long-overdue tax code reforms for medical doctors who provide pro-bono health services, resulting in more readily available medical care for Americans without growing government.
The bill would allow doctors to deduct an amount equal to the unreimbursed Medicare-based value of charity medical care during a taxable year.
The text of the bill is available here.
Congressman Higgins issued the following statement:
“Our bill makes it easier for doctors to provide charity medical care and pro-bono health services in their communities. We’ve developed this legislation over the course of three years. It addresses an issue that has been getting worse for two decades. We are carefully reforming existing tax code to encourage medical services rather than expanding government interference in the health care system. My office worked closely with Louisiana doctors to develop this legislation, and our bill reflects a compassionate desire to recognize the value of charitable medical care, reduce unexpected billing, and expand access to health services for many of our most vulnerable citizens.”
