WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Clay Higgins (R-LA) and the House Freedom Caucus delivered a letter to House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) and Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) urging them to reject any Democrat-led lame-duck spending bills in order to reduce overall spending and restore sound policies.
“In January 2023, Republicans will retake majority control of Congress. We must immediately begin the work of restoring America,” said Congressman Higgins. “Democrats have, under one-party rule, forced extensive injury upon America. With a new majority, Republicans must take decisive action in the appropriations process to defund and remove Democrats’ unrestrained tax and spending policies.”
In the letter, the House Freedom Caucus outlines three asks for Republican Leadership ahead of the September 30 spending deadline:
- Reject a lame duck omnibus and instead pass a CR that freezes spending through year’s end. This would allow a new Congress to,
- Reduce FY 2023 appropriations levels to the spending topline reflected in the Republican-led FY 2019 appropriations package (while adopting Republican riders, rejecting Democrat riders, and repealing the “Inflation Reduction Act”), and
- Restore federal sanity by securing language in appropriations bills that would unleash American energy production, secure the border, and end COVID-19 vaccine mandates.
