WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Clay Higgins (R-LA) announced today that Maria Dutile, a junior from Southside High School in Youngsville, La., is the winner of the 2019 Congressional Art Competition for Louisiana’s 3rd District.
Maria’s piece, titled “Remains,” is a charcoal self-portrait that features various textures and shading techniques.
“Self-acceptance is cliché, but an important journey we all need to take, all in various ways,” said Maria about her artwork. “Express yourself, in all its forms. Sometimes it takes more than looking yourself in the mirror, like seeing yourself in your art.”
A panel of local artists and art professionals selected Maria’s artwork as the winning piece. It will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol for one year as part of a national exhibit. Maria will also be recognized during a ceremony at the Capitol this summer.
“South Louisiana is blessed with many talented student artists, and our judges had a tough decision,” said Congressman Higgins. “Maria’s artwork showcases a high-level of skill, and we are proud to have it representing Louisiana’s 3rd District in the national exhibit.”
All submissions for the 2019 Congressional Art Competition will be publicly displayed at the Crowley Art Association weekdays from 10 am – 4 pm through May 3.

Each spring, the U.S. House of Representatives sponsors an art competition for high school students. The Congressional Art Competition began in 1982 to provide an opportunity for members of Congress to encourage and recognize the artistic talents of their young constituents. Since then, more than 650,000 high school students have been involved with the nationwide competition.
