WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Clay Higgins (R-LA), a returning member of the House Homeland Security Committee, has been named the top Republican or “Ranking Member” of the Subcommittee on Border Security, Facilitation, and Operations.
The Subcommittee is responsible for all aspects of security operations along land, air, and maritime borders. Its jurisdiction includes three of the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) seven operational components: U.S. Customs & Border Protection, Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE), and U.S. Citizenship & Immigration Services.
Congressman Higgins has been a leading voice for enhanced border security and efforts to combat illegal immigration. He has personally scouted the entire southern border and spoken with border agents in each command sector. Congressman Higgins made national headlines last year after leading a pro-ICE, pro-law enforcement resolution that condemned Democrats’ radical call to abolish ICE.
Congressman Higgins issued the following statement:
“I’m honored to be named Ranking Member of the Border Security Subcommittee. Our nation faces significant challenges, and perhaps none are more serious than the national security and humanitarian crisis on our southern border. This Subcommittee will be a focal point of the debate on how to best address border security.
“Our primary focus will be providing frontline defenders with the resources that they need and that they have requested. This includes modern technology to detect illegal crossings, enhanced physical barriers to delay those crossings, and additional manpower to respond and make arrests as necessary. This is a comprehensive approach that is guided by direct intelligence from the border agents and law enforcement professionals charged with securing our borders. We must provide those men and women with the necessary tools to carry out their mission.”
Homeland Security Committee Ranking Member Mike Rogers (R-AL) issued the following statement:
“Securing our border is essential to protecting our country and keeping Americans safe from a variety of threats. I am proud to have Rep. Higgins at the helm of the subcommittee that oversees these critical issues; he is sharp and well-equipped for the job.”
